India on Sunday announced their 16-man squad for the IND vs AFG T20 series. While the squad selection threw up a number of talking points, the selection of leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi over Yuzvendra Chahal definitely is one of the highlights. With the T20 World Cup 2024 approaching fast, India have to decide on their leg-spinner’s slot as soon as possible.

While Ravi Bishnoi has had backing of the selectors in the last few T20I squads, the lack of playing time has been a big concern for the leg-spinner. Ravi Bishnoi played the T20I series against Australia after the end of the ODI World Cup. Although he picked up nine wickets in the series and got a call-up to the India squad for the T20I series in South Africa, Bishnoi returned to India without playing a single match.
Chahal, on the other hand, last played a T20I in August against West Indies. Since then, he has found it hard to get into the Indian team. Bishnoi’s performance in the IND vs AUS T20I series has pushed Chahal further down the pecking order.
However, all is not lost for Chahal. The T20 World Cup 2024 is still a few months away. More importantly, Chahal will get a chance to prove his worth in IPL 2024 and the same goes for Bishnoi. It is logical to assume that more than the IND vs AFG T20I series, the performance of two leg spinners in IPL 2024 will decide who gets the ticket to board the T20 World Cup flight.
