‘Ravi Bishnoi is different’: Legend backs young spinner to make it to India’s T20 World Cup squad

The spin legend compared Ravi Bishnoi to other Indian spinners and explained why he was different from the others

India’s young spinner Ravi Bishnoi has turned heads with his impressive performance in the IND vs AUS T20 series. With nine wickets from five games, Bishnoi is firmly in contention for a spot in India’s playing XI for the T20 World Cup 2024. The young spinner has also earned praise from spin legend Muttaiah Muralitharan, who labelled Bishnoi as a different spinner from the others.

Speaking on JioCinema ahead of the final IND vs AUS T20I, Muralitharan explained why Bishnoi was different from other leg spinners. The Sri Lankan veteran compared the youngster to old guards Anil Kumble and Ravichandran Ashwin as well as contemporary ones like Axar Patel and Washington Sundar.

India have always had a good, uh, set of spin in every generation. You see from Anil (Kumble) to (Ravi) Ashwin to now the young guys who have come. Bishnoi is different from any other leg spinner than any other ones. He bowls quicker and he makes slides the ball a lot and Axar also is very accurate, not a big spinner of the ball and Washi also is similar because he doesn’t turn much and is very accurate and quite quicker,” Muralitharan said.

Ravi Bishnoi in India’s XI for T20 World Cup

Bishnoi’s exemplary performance in the IND vs AUS series has put him ahead of Kuldeep Yadav, Chahal and other spinners. With the T20 World Cup 2024 less than a year away and the team looking to recruit fresh faces, the youngster can easily cement his spot, provided he delivers consistently.

Ravi, a star from his U-19 days, made his debut for India in 2022. After a decent run in the IPL, Bishnoi was struggling to find a spot for himself after which he proved his worth in the Ireland series, the Asian Games and the T20I series against Australia.
