After winning the last two series’ Down Under, Team India succumbed to a 1-3 defeat in the IND vs AUS series on Sunday. And tbh, it does not really come as a big surprise, after what NZ did to India at home in the last series. There were visible problems in the batting department, and bowling as well, barring some individual brilliant performances here and there.
Largely, it was a series, where batters and bowlers struggled alike. Jasprit Bumrah was the only player — 32 wickets in the series, who kept India alive in the series, till the last day of the match. Now, InsideSport takes a look at the report card, and scores of all the players from the series.
Rohit Sharma 1/10, Virat Kohli 4/10
The two senior-most players in the team, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were total failures in the series. Virat had only one face-saving ton in the Perth Test, and hence ended the series with 190 runs. His problem with balls outside off continued, and was dismissed seven times in the series like that. Rohit was poor throughout; scored only 31 runs in the series, but he gets a point for his decision to drop himself from SCG Test.
Yashasvi Jaiswal 6.5/10, KL Rahul 5/10, Shubman Gill 2/10
Yashasvi Jaiswal was the second-highest run-getter in the series — scored 391 in 5 matches at an average of 43, including a ton and two fifties. But despite getting starts, he just found ways to get out. On the other hand, Rahul could only manage to score 276 runs, despite starting well in the series. He smashed 2 fifties, but frequent change in batting order led to his failures in latter matches. Lastly, Gill played three matches and scored only 93 runs. He was poor throughout, despite getting a few starts.
Rishabh Pant 4/10, Nitish Kumar Reddy 6/10
Pant would have settled for a lesser score, if not for his 30-ball 61 in the SCG second innings. He also kept getting out in the series, after getting starts, leaving India in tough situations. Overall, he scored 255 runs at an average of 28. Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar Reddy was decent with the bat a few times and failed the other. Including his MCG ton, he scored 298 runs in the series, and picked up 5 wickets.
Ravindra Jadeja 5/10, Washington Sundar 4/10, R Ashwin 2/10
Four wickets in three matches is poor by Jadeja’s standards. He also scored 135 runs including an innings of 77. He was bowled less, could have offered more, if the captain’s had shown more trust in him. Sundar had 114 runs, and similarly wasn’t given much to bowl. He bowled only 37 overs and picked 3 wickets. Now retired Ashwin also didn’t have much to do; he picked up a wicket in Adelaide, and then retired.

Jasprit Bumrah 10/10, Mohammed Siraj 3/10, Prasidh Krishna 5/10
Bumrah’s 32 wickets in 5 matches kept India in hunt at all times. He was the best bowler across both teams, and even led India to a win in the Perth Test. If not his injury in the 5th Test, he would have probably taken India to another win. But he did not get enough support from Siraj. Despite 20 wickets in the series, he leaked a lot of runs, and didn’t give enough support to Bumrah. Prasidh Krishna was good in patches, in the only match he played, and bagged six wickets. Maybe, if he had player earlier, he could have contributed more with the ball.
