Ranji Trophy, last round: KL Rahul, Riyan Parag, Ravindra Jadeja, Virat Kohli & Siraj in focus

Qualification remains on the line for several teams as the last round begins tomorrow (January 30).

The last round of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season begins tomorrow. With qualification for the knockout stages (quarterfinal) still on the line, the team would give their all. Of course, for most, the importance isn’t who qualifies and who doesn’t but rather that several Indian cricket team stars are in action. Namely, KL Rahul, Riyan Parag, Ravindra Jadeja, Virat Kohli, and Mohammed Siraj.

Ranji Trophy return for Virat Kohli

Kohli will have the most limelight, but his team, Delhi, can’t qualify for the next stage. They have won just one of the six prior matches, and under no circumstances can they go ahead with Elite Group D. But Kohli playing in the Ranji Trophy is the news, especially after 12 years. With severe criticism of his performance in Test cricket, all eyes are glued on how well he does against a weak team like Railways.

KL Rahul to bat at No. 3 for Karnataka

KL Rahul opted to rest last time, but with Karnataka needing a victory to qualify, he’s returned. “He brings a lot of experience and also adds a lot of value to the side in all aspects of the game,” Karnataka head coach Yere Goud said on Rahul returning to the Ranji Trophy after 5 years. Haryana will be the opponents for them and Goud has confirmed that KL Rahul will bat at number for them.

Siraj has a point to prove

Mohammed Siraj hasn’t been selected for the ICC Champions Trophy. Everyone reckons that’s because Team India wants to manage his workload, but he’ll play for Hyderabad against Vidarbha. Like Kohli, Rahul didn’t play in the last round of the Ranji Trophy. The pacer can still come into India’s ODI squad, especially given that there are question marks over Mohammed Shami’s and Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness. That’s why this game is of importance for him.

Parag vs Jadeja

The last big billed game would be Assam vs. Saurashtra. Two big games would be in action. For Assam, Riyan Parag is returning after an injury and will lead them. He hopes to get them the first victory of the 2024-25 season. Ravindra Jadeja will be the only international star to feature in back-to-back games in the Ranji Trophy. He’ll then travel to Nagpur and join the team for the India vs. England ODI series.
