Prithvi Shaw faces a nearly impossible task en route to making his comeback to India cricket team. The out-of-favour Mumbai batter is boggled with multiple issues that range from fitness to issues with work ethics. These controversies have taken a huge toll on the player, to an extent where he is now not even a part of the Mumbai cricket team – the only side that he represented regularly after being dropped from the Indian side.
No Ranji Trophy or IPL, what’s next for Prithvi Shaw?
Shaw’s troubles started with domestic red-ball cricket when Mumbai were forced to drop him midway through the first-leg of the tournament. The reason was he was found to have excessive body fat which was way above the permissible level. While he got a chance to redeem himself in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he squandered most of the opportunities, leading Mumbai skipper Shreyas Iyer advising the “god-gifted” youngster to improve his work ethics in order to sustain his career.
Things only went down south for Shaw from then onwards. Apart from being caught in a controversy for spending an entire night out partying, he was dropped from the side for the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well. To make matters worse, he went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction after DC released him following IPL 2024.

If these issues weren’t already enough, Shaw has now been excluded from Mumbai’s squad for the second leg of the Ranji Trophy. Instead, Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to take his place for the side’s first game against J&K on January 23. With no Ranji Trophy or IPL 2025 in his sight, Prithvi Shaw’s only hopes of making a comeback hinges on his participation in County Championships.
In the recent past, none of the Indian cricketers who took part in County cricket have managed to secure a spot in the Indian team. Be it Karun Nair, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara or Yuzvendra Chahal, none of these stars have been able to make their comeback to the Indian Test team or in any other format. Despite playing for Northamptonshire in 2024 where he played a series of brilliant knocks, Shaw’s comeback via that route is not guaranteed. For now, he has no place in either the ODI, T20I or Test squad. It remains to be seen how effectively he can use the County opportunity to make a comeback to the Mumbai team and if at all it helps him in any way in finding his way back into the national side.
