Ranji Trophy Day 3: Ex-CSK batter hits 200, history by Anshul Kamboj & “all-rounder” Mohammed Shami

At the end of Day 3 of Round 5 of Ranji Trophy, Baroda have the most points (27) as they have recorded 4 wins in 5 matches.

Wow! The fifth round of the ongoing Ranji Trophy will undoubtedly go into the history books. If we saw an unprecedented 606-run partnership by two Goa batters, Haryana’s Anshul Kamboj has done something out of ordinary. Under the scorching heat in Lahli, former Mumbai Indians (MI) pacer Anshul Kamboj claimed a ten-wicket haul, thus becoming only the third-ever player to take a perfect 10 in a Ranji Trophy game. Apart from this, former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Shaik Rasheed hammered a superb double century for Andhra Pradesh. Meanwhile, we even had Mohammed Shami hitting some mighty blows. While, on the other hand, Mumbai stand on the brink of a victory as they need 111 runs on the last day, with nine wickets in hand.

Anshul Kamboj: Remember the name!

Cricket fans witnessed a rare feat today as Haryana’s young fast bowler Anshul Kamboj achieved what only two others have done in Ranji Trophy history – claiming all 10 wickets in an innings. The 23-year-old finished with remarkable figures of 30.1-9-49-10 against Kerala at Lahli’s Chaudhary Bansi Lal Stadium.

Kamboj joins an exclusive club that includes Bengal’s Premangsu Chatterjee (1956-57) and Rajasthan’s Pradeep Sunderam (1985-86). In the broader context of first-class cricket, he becomes the sixth Indian to achieve this milestone, following in the footsteps of legends like Anil Kumble and Subhash Gupte. Despite only began taking cricket seriously at age 14, he’s not only representing his state but has also broken into the IPL with Mumbai Indians (MI), who released him ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.

The past year has been exceptional for Kamboj. He played a crucial role in Haryana’s Vijay Hazare Trophy victory, delivered an impressive 8-wicket haul in the Duleep Trophy, and showcased his talent in the T20 Asia Cup with a match-winning performance (3/33) against Pakistan. Since IPL 2024, Kamboj has featured in 5 FC matches and he hasn’t gone wicketless since then! IPL franchises look out! Regardless for his historic performance, Haryana has struggled in the game as they still trail by 152 runs and have only 3 wickets remaining.

Mohammed Shami operating, with both bat & ball

India’s premier fast bowler Mohammed Shami marked his return to competitive cricket after nearly a year with a compelling performance in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy clash against Madhya Pradesh. Well, he is one of the pacers India have and also one of the best “pinch-hitters”. The seasoned pacer, playing his first match since the 2023 ODI World Cup, demonstrated he hasn’t lost his touch despite the extended break following surgery.

After a quiet opening day where he went wicketless (0-34 in 10 overs), Shami found his rhythm on Day 2, ripping through MP’s batting lineup with a masterful display of pace bowling. His figures of 4-54 in 19 overs, including 4 maidens, played a crucial role in securing Bengal’s first-innings lead of 61 runs. Making the occasion more special was the presence of his brother Mohammed Kaif in the same team, who chipped in with two wickets.

Shami with bat?

But it was Shami’s unexpected batting heroics on Day 3 that truly captured attention. Coming lower down the order, he unleashed a brisk 37 off just 36 balls, including two fours and two lusty sixes. His aggressive batting helped Bengal post 276 in their second innings, setting MP a challenging target of 338. Earlier in the innings, Bengal’s Shahbaz Ahmed had laid the foundation with a quick-fire 92 off 80 balls, well supported by captain Anustup Majumdar’s steady 44. Shami capped off the day with a crucial wicket as well, reducing MP to 150/3 at Stumps.

Ex-CSK batter hammers 200

Shaik Rasheed, who rose to fame when he was named as the vice-captain for the India Under-19 side for the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup, has hammered a scintillating double hundred. The talented batter, who was part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) setup for two seasons, did this while playing for Andhra Pradesh against rivals Hyderabad. At the iconic Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Hyderabad made 301 runs, with Tanmay Agarwal scoring 159. Andhra, were in a spot of bother at 84/2, but Rasheed clubbed 203 off 372 balls. He hammered 28 fours, showcasing his water-tight technique and immense class. Who knows, CSK might buy the 20-year-old talent back!
