Ranji Trophy Day 1: Mohammed Shami goes wicketless, MI’s released Arjun Tendulkar beats Sachin’s record

Goa has already claimed a huge first-innings lead of 330 runs against Arunachal Pradesh. Junior Tendulkar shone for Goa, taking his maiden fifer.

The fifth round of the Ranji Trophy began with the famous update on Mohammed Shami, who made his startling return to competitive cricket after a year-long gap. He last featured in the ODI World Cup 2023 Final but now Shami marked his run-up during Bengal’s match against Madhya Pradesh. Apart from this, defending champions Mumbai played their Ranji Trophy game against Services in New Delhi. Meanwhile, Baroda, the current table-toppers of Group A, continued their impressive form as they already took a 205-run lead on Day 1 against Meghalaya. Sachin Tendulkar’s son, Arjun Tendulkar, meanwhile claimed his maiden first-class fifer for Goa too!

Mohammed Shami’s quiet return to Ranji Trophy

At Indore’s Holkar Stadium in Indore, Mohammed Shami’s much-anticipated comeback failed to produce fireworks as he went wicketless in his 10-over spell, conceding 34 runs for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh. The 34-year-old pacer, making his first appearance since the 2023 World Cup final, showed signs of finding his rhythm but couldn’t make inroads into the MP batting lineup.

Bengal struggled overall, managing just 228 runs after being put in to bat, with Shami contributing a mere 2 runs with the bat. MP ended the day strongly at 103/1, with Rajat Patidar and Subhransu Senapati at the crease. For Bengal, the star of the day was Shahbaz Ahmed, who made a much-needed 92.

Arjun Tendulkar shines!

Meanwhile, in a remarkable display of bowling prowess, Arjun Tendulkar outshone his illustrious father’s first-class record. The 25-year-old left-arm pacer, representing Goa, demolished Arunachal Pradesh’s batting lineup with impressive figures of 5-25 in nine overs. His maiden five-wicket haul helped bundle out AP for just 84 runs. This performance made him a rare addition to the elite list of cricketers with both a century and a five-wicket haul in first-class cricket – a feat that even the legendary Sachin Tendulkar couldn’t achieve during his decorated career spanning 310 first-class matches, including 200 iconic Tests.

The younger Tendulkar’s devastating spell included the wickets of all top five Arunachal batter, showcasing his growing maturity as a bowler. With this performance, Arjun has now taken his first-class wicket tally to 32 wickets in 16 matches, marking this as his best bowling figures, surpassing his previous best of 4/49. He will be up in auction in the the uncapped bowlers categories as well.
