Rajeev Shukla to resign from BCCI? – The Vice President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may be on his way out. The reason is BCCI’s ratified constitution that doesn’t permit any public servants to hold BCCI office. As Rajeev Shukla has been elected unopposed from Chhattisgarh, he may have to step down. “My term will start only next month. The elections are held early and the swearing-in takes place next month. There is some time left,” Rajeev Shukla told Cricbuzz.

Rajeev Shukla to resign from BCCI? Vice President says ‘Have time to decide’ after elected to Rajya Sabha

The former Congress MP was elected as the Vice President of BCCI in December 2020, succeeding Mahim Verma. Shukla has also held multiple offices in BCCI over the last two decades including the IPL Chairman. He was also the Team Manager in the past. Shukla is also currently a member of BCCI’s Apex Council.

What does BCCI’s Constitution say?

As per Rule 7.2, “The Vice-President shall officiate in the President’s absence, when the President is unavailable; The Vice-President shall exercise such functions and duties as he may be empowered with by the General Body or the Apex Council.”

The President, Vice-President, Secretary, Joint Secretary and Treasurer have been designated as office-bearers of the BCCI.The constitution also prevents any office bearers to continue as BCCI official if they assume any role as a public servant. Rajeev Shukla to resign? Why does he need to step down?

  • AS per BCCI’s constitution adopted after recommendations from the Lodha Committee, no government or public servant can hold BCCI office.
  • As per BCCI’s constitution, President, Vice-President, Secretary, Joint Secretary and Treasurer have been designated as office-bearers.
  • “A person shall be disqualified from being an Office-Bearer, a member of the Governing Council or any committee or any similar organisation if he or she… is a Minister or Government Servant or holds a public office,” the BCCI constitution states.
  • Hence, once he takes oath as Rajya Sabha MP, he will have to step down from the BCCI.
