Manchester United played their pre season friendly at Murrayfield Stadium when they took on Rangers. Amidst all the glitter of the spot, a cricket match near the stadium had to be cancelled. The reason? The Players were racially and homophobically abused by the fans.

The was supposed to take place between Murrayfield DAFS and Stewart’s Melville Cricket Club in Edinburgh. But as per the host club, the players were assaulted along with being slapped with racial and homophobic abuses. Currently, the police us set to be investigating on the matter.
The club took to social media to claim about the matter. They wrote, “Very upset that our 4th team had to abandon their game today due to a combination of sexist, homophobic and racist abuse at Roseburn Park outside Murrayfield Stadium today against Stewart’s Melville Cricket Club.”
While investigations in the case continue, the police has claimed that they are reviewing all the abuse reports. On the flip side, the police further claimed that they are yet to receive complaints based on the response of the incidents.
The club further claimed that the police took no action during the event. They went on to claim that the police who was nearby took no heed into the incident.
“Not only that, there were two instances of physical assault that were perpetrated on players. The perpetrators of said abuse were fans of football clubs playing a friendly at Murrayfield Stadium – and police were standing 50 yards away. Players playing any sport in a public space should be able to do so without fear of violence and without homophobic and racial abuse and other anti-social behaviour,” said Phil Yelland, the president of Murrayfield DAFS.
“We can’t turn back the clock, but the club will seek answers about why we could not play our game safely.” he concluded.
