Race for World No.1 ODI Team: ICC ODI Rankings – 2019 World Cup finalists England and New Zealand will battle it out for the World No.1 rank over the course of this week as they face off against India and Ireland respectively. The Kiwis are currently atop the standings following their one-wicket win over Ireland this weekend, but could lose it to Jos Buttler and Co, should the world champions seal a 3-0 whitewash over India. New Zealand currently tops the ICC Team Rankings in ODIs with 126 rating points, one more than rivals England. Both teams are in action on Tuesday and a win for either of them would see them level on points, with Tom Latham and Co facing Ireland and England in action against Rohit Sharma’s India at the Oval.

Should India lose the series 3-0 to England, the World Champions will scale to the top of the summit, irrespective of the results in Ireland vs New Zealand series. Buttler and Co. will have 129 points for a 3-0 whitewash, more than NZ’s tally of 128 should they achieve the same result against Ireland.

A solitary loss will however be detrimental to England, with New Zealand having the chance to clinch a four-point advantage at the top of the table. The same applies to the Kiwis, with a defeat possibly seeing them drift five points off England, even Buttler and Co. fail to complete a whitewash.

As for India, they are currently fourth in the ICC ODI rankings. A 3-0 win would see them climb to 3rd in the table, still 3 points behind their opponents England. A series loss will have no bearing on their position in the table, but will start them further away from arch-rivals Pakistan who are currently above them in the standings.
