Race for NO.1! Australia, India to battle for top ODI spot ahead of World Cup

The IND vs AUS ODIs which is starting from Friday, September 2023, is not just a preparatory platform for both teams for World Cup 2023, but it also a fight to be the top-ranked ODI side. Despite not reaching Asia Cup 2023 final, Pakistan remained the no.1 ranked ODI side. However, it could change with the conclusion of the IND vs AUS ODIs.

We take a look at the fixtures and scenarios in which India, Australia can become No.1 side before the start of the World Cup on October 5.

How can Team India become No. 1?

India have a golden opportunity to become No. in all format before the World Cup. Rohit Sharma an Co. could reach the No.1 position as early as Friday with a win in the first ODI. The victory in 1st ODI will push Team India above Pakistan to become the No.1 ranked team across all formats of the game.

However, if India lose the series to Australia, Pakistan will remain the top-ranked side for the World Cup. And if the Men in Blue suffers a whitewash, India will slip to third position and Australia go on top.

How can Australia become No. 1?

After suffering defeats in 4th and 5th ODI, Australia are no longer in the box seat to be the No.1 ODI side. The only way the Men in Yellow reclaim the top spot in ODI ranking if they complete a 3-0 whitewash against India.

However, if Australia start the series with two wins, they will go on top of the rankings until the final ODI at least.
