The race against time has started for – KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, and Shreyas Iyer. The Team India star trio is eying a return in August to solidify their spot in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
The deadline for submitting World Cup 2023 squads has been set. As previously reported by InsideSport, the preliminary deadline for submitting squads is August 29, with the final deadline being September 5. In addition, all teams must be approved by the ICC Technical Committee.
With the WC deadline on September 5, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer will have to make their comeback in August if they want a spot in the team.
India World Cup 2023 Squad
KL Rahul: As it is almost impossible for India Cricket Team to get Rishabh Pant back in action before September 5, the BCCI and selectors want KL Rahul to do the job instead. Rahul is currently rehabilitating and will return to action in the Asia Cup 2023.
Rahul has resumed batting practise while recovering at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Over the next two weeks, he will steadily raise the intensity of his exercise.
KL Rahul is recovering from thigh surgery after suffering an injury in the IPL 2023. While he missed the second half of the IPL, as well as the WTC Final 2023 and the West Indies tour, he is expected to return for the Asia Cup.
Shreyas Iyer: Despite some setbacks, Iyer is back on track. He also had back surgery and has started batting practise. He is unlikely to participate in the Ireland tour. However, because the series does not begin until August 18, selectors will make a decision on him later this month.
It is expected that Shreyas Iyer will participate in Asia Cup 2023 tournament in August.
Jasprit Bumrah: After missing a year of cricket, Bumrah is expected to be available for the India vs Ireland T20Is (IND vs IRE).
During the England trip last year, the premium pacer suffered a recurrence of his back issue. While he did return for six overs later in 2022, his hasty comeback cost India dearly. Apart from the ongoing IND vs WI series, Jasprit Bumrah missed the T20 World Cup, IPL 2023, Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and WTC Final.
Bumrah has started bowling at the NCA full-time and will play a few practice games this month.
