Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has warned out-of-form Shubman Gill after youngster’s another failed outing in the second IND vs ENG Test at Vizag on Friday.
Gill, who was looking comfortable in the middle, failed to convert a promising start and departed on 34. Ravi Shastri who was on commentary duty said that youngsters should prove themselves to cement their place in the Indian side.
While Shastri didn’t directly took Gill’s name, his reminder that veteran players like Cheteshwar Pujara are waiting, could be directed to Gill
“It’s a fresh side, a young side. These youngsters have to prove themselves. Don’t forget, Pujara is waiting. He is grinding it out at the Ranji Trophy and is always in the radar,” Shastri said on air.
Notably, Gill has been struggling to score runs, managing to score only 207 runs in 11 innings at an average of 18.81 without a single fifty. With KL Rahul and Virat Kohli likely to return for third Test and in-form Sarfaraz Khan waiting, Gill’s place in Playing XI certainly will be in question.
Meanwhile, Pujara, who is out of the India Test team since WTC Final last year, is piling on runs for Saurashtra in the ongoing Ranji Trophy.
The veteran batter has amassed 538 runs in seven innings at 89.66 so far this season and is determined to mark his comeback in the national side.
