PSL to NOT go IPL way! PCB to maintain six-team format for T20 tournament till 2025

The PCB reportedly wants to avoid any legal complications with the existing franchises.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided not to increase the number of teams in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) at least till the tenth edition of the tournament, which is scheduled to take place in 2025. Notably, the Indian Premier League (IPL) introduced two new teams – Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants – in IPL 2022 to make it a 10-team tournament.

According to a report by Cricket Pakistan, Ex-PCB Chief Najam Sethi had initially planned to introduce two new teams in the PSL 2024. However, before this could be implemented, he had to resign from his position.

The report claimed that PCB wants to avoid any legal complications with the existing franchises, who had signed a 10-year contract with the board in 2015. The contract stipulates that any changes in the league format or structure would require the consent of all the stakeholders.

The report also added that the existing franchises are not in favour of adding new teams. One team said the franchises worked hard and and now new people want to reap the benefits.

Currently, six teams – Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Multan Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi, and Quetta Gladiators – participate in the tournament.

The PSL, which started in 2016, is Pakistan’s premier T20 league and features some of the best players from around the world.
