PSL franchises to directly sign major stars? PCB proposes new plan to woo stars to cash-strapped league

Amid uncertainty over the availability of players, the PCB has proposed a plan to allow PSL franchises to directly sign 1-2 marquee players

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has proposed to allow Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises to directly sign marquee players for the tenth edition of the tournament. In a desperate attempt to attract more stars to the league, the board has proposed to allow teams to directly negotiate with one or two overseas players. As per reports, PSL 10 is all set to overlap with IPL 2025, something that the franchises aren’t happy about.

PSL teams to directly sign overseas stars?

As per Cricket Pakistan, the PCB has proposed to allow teams to negotiate with major players directly, potentially offering them higher salaries. The report states that a part of the payment will be borne by the PCB itself. This proposal comes at a time when the PSL franchises are yet to receive their share of revenue from the board for PSL 9.

While the PCB has reportedly discussed the availability of players with other boards, there is no conclusion that the former has arrived at yet. Apart from this, the PCB has set aside $500,000 from the broadcast deal to contribute to deals that franchises directly make with overseas stars.

As reported earlier, the PSL franchises are unhappy with the league overlapping with IPL 2025. The teams flagged the unavailability of players as a major cause for concern as players prefer to participate in the cash-rich IPL instead of the PSL. While the PCB has maintained that the schedule will jointly be decided by the teams, the franchises have rebutted stating that they were given no choice. A report claimed that while the PCB initially suggested October-November window for PSL 10, it was subsequently denied.

To add more fuel to the fire, England reportedly has rejected Pakistan’s request to host PSL 10 playoffs and finals. It was reported earlier that Pakistan would next ask UAE.
