Prithvi Shaw’s injury struggle continues; India opener to make comeback in IPL 2024

Shaw had suffered an injury to his right knee in August last year and had to undergo PCL surgery, which had ruled him out for at least 3 months.

Prithvi Shaw can’t catch a break. The aggressive opener’s plan to make a return to cricket after suffering a knee injury in August last year has been marred. Shaw had undergone posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) surgery, which had ruled him out for three months.

Now, 5 months after his surgery, Prithvi Shaw is yet to return to full fitness. The batter had started to practice in nets and planned for a comeback in domestic cricket. However, BCCI has decided to push the 24-year-old’s comeback date back a month to ensure Shaw doesn’t make a mistake that may rule him out once again.

According to Cricbuzz, Shaw will need at least one more month to make his return. BCCI is trying to intensify Shaw’s workload over the next three weeks to assess if his knee can endure the increased demands. While he tries to get back to full fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), he’ll also take part in some matches before he makes his return.

BCCI believes that Shaw still needs to work on his agility and acceleration and is undertaking drills to improve his movement. The idea behind Shaw’s comeback is to test if his injured knee is robust enough to handle the physical demands of batting and fielding in competitive cricket.

After being booted out of the India cricket team due to his dwindling performances, the only hope for the opener is the Indian Premier League. Despite his poor show last season, his IPL franchise, the Delhi Capitals, has shown faith in him and retained him.

Returning from injury, Shaw has a tough challenge ahead of him. After being out for more than 6 months, the aggressive opener will likely play his first match since August 2023 in the IPL 2024.
