Prithvi Shaw settles for just Rs 2.5 crore at IPL ‘mock’ auction, moves from DC to LSG

Prithvi Shaw settles for just Rs 2.5 crore at IPL ‘mock’ auction, moves from DC to LSG

In the last three years, Prithvi averages just 22.57 while scoring 587 runs with a strike rate of 150.12 and four fifties to his name.

Prithvi Shaw has finally changed franchises. Been with the Delhi Capitals (DC) since 2018, the swashbuckling opener has been moved ahead. The 25-year-old had head coach Ricky Ponting’s backing for a long time and was even retained for Rs 7.5 crore before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction. But his returns have been even since getting that big paycheck and now that Ponting’s gone, so is Prithvi.

Low interest for Prithvi Shaw at ‘mock’ IPL 2025 auction

This isn’t official yet. All this occurred at a mock IPL mega auction organised by Ravichandran Ashwin. Unlike most top Indian stars, Prithvi set his base price at Rs 75 lakh to ensure that he finds a bidder. But Ashwin’s mock auction started the bid at Rs 1 crore instead. Only three franchises showed interest in the attacking opener.

Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders started the bidding but both stopped when the price got to Rs 2.25 crore. The Lucknow Super Giants came in, placed just one bid, and got Prithvi for Rs 2.5 crore.

Prithvi Shaw’s issues on & off the field

Ever since making his IPL and Team India debut, Prithvi has been swarmed by one controversy or another. The most recent of which has been his dropping from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team due to him being overweight. His lack of discipline has been pointed out by the Mumbai Cricket Association recently, and Ponting has previously narrated how Prithvi refused to bat in the nets during the IPL when out of form.

Considering what’s been happening with Prithvi, especially with his fitness not improving for quite a few years now, no franchise would like to take a bet on him. His numbers are good enough, but there might be a dozen openers who have performed better than him in the last couple of years.

If Prithvi somehow manages to get more than Rs 5 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction, he should consider himself extremely lucky.
