Prabhsimran Singh is showing the world that he’s one of the most talented and destructive openers in India. Watching the 24-year-old go about things up the order for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the last couple of seasons has been a sight to behold. His fearless attitude in the powerplay sets him apart from many.
PBKS saw something in Prabhsimran and decided that he’d be one of the two retentions for them ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. It was a bit shocking as they ignored Ashutosh Sharma, but the opener has proved them right. Since getting retained, Prabhsimran has been on a great run.
Prabhsimran Singh in red-hot form before IPL 2025
He scored over 200 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), scoring over 25 in five of the six matches he played. It didn’t prove enough for Punjab as they were knocked out of the group stage, but he made his mark. But that was just the start. He’s showing his true potential in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT).
Five matches in, he’s the highest scorer of the domestic 50-over tournament. He scored an unbeaten 150 against Ranji Trophy, Irani Cup, and SMAT champions, Mumbai, on December 28. On the last day of 2024, he chose violence once again. Batting first against Saurashtra, Prabhsimran, along with his partner-in-crime Abhishek Sharma, stitched a massive 298-run stand in just 31 overs.
Abhishek stole the show with his 177 from 97 deliveries, but Prabhsimran wasn’t that far behind. He hit 125 runs off just 95 balls, hitting his second consecutive hundred in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This may not earn him a Team India call-up given that the Champions Trophy 2025 is the goal right now, but he won’t be far out after the ICC tournament.
