Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag spilled the beans on what he told a young David Warner about Test and T20 cricket back in 2009. The fiery opener recalled his advice for the Aussie southpaw as the latter is playing his farewell Test at the SCG in the 3rd PAK vs AUS Test.
When Sehwag told David Warner he would enjoy Tests over T20s
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Sehwag recounted when he first saw the explosive opener when he was a part of the Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2009. Warner had hardly played any Test cricket back then and had just made his ODI and T20I debuts. The former Indian opener noted that Davey had all the talent and control to be a Test batter but lacked the confidence that he had the skills to be a Test cricketer.
Interestingly, Sehwag found that Warner would be better suited for Tests over T20s and revealed how the latter laughed it off when he suggested the idea to him. The former opener then gave a golden piece of advice for the southpaw, making him one of the first figures to suggest the idea of playing Tests consistently.
“When I saw him, I was convinced that he would be better in Tests than he even is in T20 cricket. I shared this view with him, and he started laughing. He said, ‘I am so far away from Test cricket and in Australia it’s so difficult to break into the Test team to start with.’ I told him, ‘You will enjoy it. It’s made for you. In Test cricket, you have a powerplay throughout the day. In T20 cricket the powerplay only lasts for 20 overs.’ He started laughing and said, ‘Then I’ll certainly enjoy it‘,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
