“Powerplay”: GT’s Gill zeroes in on area where “consistent team” need to pull up socks

Ahead of IPL 2025, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill addressed an area of concern for the team which they needed to desperately work on

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill reckons that the team needs to do better in the powerplay phase in order to excel. His remarks come a week ahead of the side’s IPL 2025 opener against Punjab Kings. After winning the title in 2022, GT managed to finish 8th on the standings in 2024, winning just 7 out of the 14 games.

Gill wants GT to maximize powerplay

Speaking at a press conference ahead of IPL 2025, Gill noted that GT’s performance wasn’t good in the powerplay in 2024. He stressed on the need to score maximum runs during the first six overs. Gill added that it was a batter’s responsibility to help the team in the powerplay.

The plan is always to make maximum runs during the powerplay. Our performance wasn’t good last year whether in powerplay or after that. We couldn’t play that well and we couldn’t win as many games as we hoped to. We will try to better the things we couldn’t last year,” Gill said.

The GT skipper, however, backed the brand of cricket being played by the team. Gill claimed that the side had played consistent cricket for the past 3 years, adding that the wins speak for themselves. he said that GT had the highest % of wins in the lasst 3 years and said that IPL 2025 could turn out to be a good season if the team can continue doing that.

We have played the most consistent cricket and the wins speak for themselves. I don’t think we need to change anything and we will continue playing the way we have been doing over the last 3 years,” Gill added.
