Shreyas Iyer

The metropolitan city of Mumbai has always produced high-quality batters in their ‘maidans’ and Shreyas Iyer is one such player whose natural ability is on display every time he walks onto the field with the bat in his hand. Born on 6th December 1994 in Mumbai, Shreyas Iyer is a right-handed batter representing India and is considered by many as a future star in the cricket-loving nation.

Iyer began his career by playing cricket for his college team and in 2014, he represented India at the Men’s Under-19 World Cup. After returning from the World Cup, he made his T20 debut for Mumbai against Baroda in the 2014 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy season. Later in the year, he made his List A and first-class debuts for Mumbai. In 2015, Iyer was picked by the Delhi franchise for the 2015 Indian T20 League. He had a breakout season that year, scoring 439 runs in 14 matches, and was also awarded the Emerging Player of the Tournament.

A couple of years later, in October 2017, Iyer made his T20I debut for India during the home series against New Zealand, and the following month, he made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka. His first hundred for India came in an ODI against New Zealand in Hamilton in 2020. He had to wait a long time to represent his country in red-ball cricket and finally made his Test debut for India against New Zealand in 2021, where he scored a century and fifty.

After spending several years in the Delhi franchise, Iyer was bought by the Kolkata franchise in the 2022 mega auction for INR 12.25 crore and was appointed as the captain of the side for the 2022 Indian T20 League. He will continue to lead them in the 2023 season and the middle-order batter will be hoping to bring his side success. He is an attacking batter with the ability to attack spin and pace bowling. He is known for his aggressive batting style and his ability to hit big shots. He is also a sharp fielder and has taken some stunning catches in the outfield.
