England on Thursday outclassed West Indies to win their first match of the T20 World Cup Super Eight by 8 wickets. Chasing 180 runs, England rode on opener Phil Salt and Jonny Bairstow’s innings to reach the tie with more than two overs to spare. Courtesy of the win, England moved to the top of Group 1 of the Super Eight table courtesy of a fantastic net run rate.
West Indies rely on team effort
England won the toss and elected to field in the batting-friendly wicket of Darren Sammy Cricket Ground. West Indies got off to a good start but lost opener Brandon King to an injury. However, the Caribbean team reached a respectable score of 180 courtesy of a team effort from the likes of Johnson Charles, Nicolas Pooran, Rovman Powell and some late onslaught Sherfane Rutherford.
England ride on Salt, Bairstow’s unbeaten partnership
Chasing 181, England lost Jos Buttler and Moin Ali early but Phil Salt remained at the crease along with Jonny Bairstow to play out what seemed like an easy chase.

Salt started his onslaught just when the required rate was going over 12 and Bairstow struck some good shots to ensure England remained in the hunt. Salt finished with 87 not out from 47 balls as West Indies bowlers looked clueless in front of the fiery batter. Bairstow was a bit more subdued, but rotated the strike when needed to remain not out at 48 of 26 balls. The win brought England’s T20 WC campaign back on track after a somewhat shaky group stage.
