Perform or Perish: Last chance for Gautam Gambhir to steady ship or fear sinking after Champions Trophy

Gautam Gambhir led India Cricket Team were handed a humiliating whitewash at home 3-0 against New Zealand

As things stand, it is now or never for Gautam Gambhir. As per reports, the BCCI top brass is not at all happy with the performance of the India Cricket Team. Team India currently trails the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2-1 and hopes to make amendments in the Sydney Test. As things stand, Gambhir’s position is not safe and his team’s performance needs to improve significantly.

India has been rather poor under Gambhir’s reign. The biggest loss came at home against New Zealand. The Black Caps inflicted a humiliating 3-0 whitewash against Rohit Sharma and Co. And now heading into the IND vs AUS Test series, India have gone down 2-1 to the hosts.

Will Gautam Gambhir be sacked?

“There is a Test match to be played and then there is Champions Trophy. If the performance doesn’t improve, even Gautam Gambhir’s position wouldn’t be safe,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.

As things stand, Gambhir won’t be solely judged based on the performances of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. This is mainly owing to the fact that an ICC event is on the horizon. In just over a month, the India Cricket Team will participate in the ICC Champions Trophy.

Should India fail to perform in the ICC event, then Gambhir’s position will be unsettled. Right now, as per reports, there are some corners. However, the BCCI is unwilling to make any changes simply because they want to give Gambhir time. And more importantly, the management is unwilling to make changes before a big ICC event.
