The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to completely overhaul its medical department days after its Director of Medical and Sports Sciences, Dr. Sohail Saleem, stepped down. A big reason behind this revamp is the increased number of instances where players have gotten injured, been misdiagnosed, and failed to recover on time.
According to Cricket Pakistan, the PCB will advertise to find a new medical department head soon and a new committee will be formed as well. The job for this committee will be to oversea the selection process and meanwhile, an assistant professor will temporality take hold of the department.
Ihsanullah incident behind PCB medical department overhaul
Although big names like Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, and Shaheen Afridi have all either suffered injuries or faced aftereffects of them due to not being treated correctly. But, truly, it’s Ihsanullah who has suffered the most. The promising talent suffered an elbow injury in April last year, and after more than a year, he’s yet to return to cricket.
The reason why Dr. Sohail Saleem had ‘stepped down’ was due to mismanagement of Ihsanullah’s injury. The fast bowler wasn’t diagnosed on time, and his treatment wasn’t adequate either. Shaheen hasn’t been at his best since the end of last year. We have seen his speed drop from the 140s to the low 120s and late 130s. Naseem missed out on six months of cricket, while Rauf has been out of action since February.
