In the wake of the ongoing tensions surrounding the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that Pakistan will host an ICC event in 2028. The announcement comes as a result of the financial losses incurred by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after India’s refusal to travel for the Champions Trophy. During a meeting of the PCB Governing Board, chaired by Mohsin Naqvi, it was revealed that the ICC had assured Pakistan compensation in the form of hosting rights for a Women’s tournament in 2028 that will be potentially played in the T20 format. This was previously reported and now it looks all but confirmed, as per the Express Tribune.
While discussions regarding the Champions Trophy continue, the Pakistan Cricket Board has reportedly reached an understanding with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over the issue. India’s refusal to travel for the Champions Trophy led to financial strain on Pakistan, with the PCB opting not to accept the offered monetary compensation. Instead, Pakistan proposed a model where neither country would send teams to the other’s country for upcoming ICC events over the next three years, a move that reflects their emphasis on national pride.

In these three years, India are set to host two big ICC tournaments. These include a Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025, Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026. Moreover, in 2025, India will also host the Asia Cup. Hence, considering all these, Indian fans might be devoided of India vs Pakistan clashes till 2028 at home. The IND vs PAK clash at the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is likely to take place in Colombo, Sri Lanka instead.
Pakistan to host ICC Women’s World Cup in 2028
The highlight of the meeting was the ICC’s formal decision to award Pakistan the hosting rights for the Women’s Tournament in 2028. This will be a great step in Pakistan’s return to the global cricketing spotlight, following years of political and security challenges that have hindered hosting major events.
