The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has continued their “robust recruitment process” after team’s World Cup debacle. The board on Friday named cricketer Wahab Riaz as the chief selector of the Pakistan cricket team.
Wahab Riaz replaces Inzamam-ul-Haq after the veteran resigned from the position due to a potential conflict of interest. It must be mentioned that Wahab Riaz still plays franchise-level cricket and represents Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). However, the left-arm pacer will now be tasked to select Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming Test tour of Australia.

Expressing his gratitude, Riaz said that he is honoured to take the role and will work for the betterment of Pakistan cricket.
“I am honoured to assume the role of chairperson for the national men’s selection committee. I extend my gratitude to Chairman PCB Management Committee, Mr Zaka Ashraf, for entrusting me with this responsibility. The decision to involve former players in cricketing matters is commendable and I am willing to work for the betterment of Pakistan cricket,” said Wahab in a press statement released by PCB.
Riaz also talked about the upcoming fixtures of Pakistan cricket team. “Heading a selection committee is a challenging task. We have a significant Australia tour coming up that is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle and a T20I series against New Zealand that will allow us to develop a formidable unit leading up to the ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies in June next year,” Riaz added.
The former Pakistani pacer also said that his priority will be to give more preference to the domestic cricket. “I have a good rapport with the Pakistan Men’s Team Director Mohammad Hafeez. We will be working closely for the success of Pakistan cricket. My primary goal would be to give weightage to the top performers in domestic cricket and announce well-rounded squads equipped with the necessary skillsets. I will always be available to the players for feedback and advice,” the 38-year-old added.
Earlier, Pakistan bowling coach Morne Morkel stepped down after team’s disappointing performance. Pakistan team’s skipper Babar Azam then resigned as captain in all three formats on Wednesday.
