PCB chief warns Pakistan selectors to pick Babar Azam’s successor after “careful consideration”

PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi has reportedly instructed the selection committee to pick Babar Azam's replacement as Pakistan skipper after careful consideration

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi advised the selection committee to pick the next white-ball skipper after careful consideration. His remarks come after Babar Azam resigned as skipper for the second time in one year. The PCB is yet to have talks with Muhammad Rizwan – who was tipped to be the frontrunner to replace Babar as the T20I and ODI skipper.

Who will replace Babar Azam?

As per Cricket Pakistan, the PCB chief instructed to committee to pick the captain carefully as the position was an important one. Surely, Pakistan wouldn’t want to have a rerun of the Babar Azam episode again. Additionally, the team is under immense pressure to break free from the shackles of poor form and end their miserable run in important tournaments.

“I have told them to take a decision after careful consideration because the captain’s position is important,” Naqvi remarked.

Why did Babar Azam resign as Pakistan captain?

Babar Azam felt increasingly disconnected with his teammates following the T20 World Cup, forcing him to take the decision to step down as skipper. Additionally, the star batter also reportedly felt undervalued with the team. It is pertinent to point out that Babar was reinstated as the skipper just before the T20 WC after having stepped down from the role in 2023 after the ODI World Cup.

As per Cricket Pakistan, Saud Shakeel, Salman Ali Agha and Fakhar Zaman are other frontrunners for the position apart from Rizwan. Reports have already surfaced about the keeper-batter wanting to address his concerns over the treatment of previous captains if he was offered the role. With less than five months to go for the Champions Trophy, Pakistan desperately need a full-time white ball skipper.
