Jay Shah has been named Greg Barclay’s successor and will take over as the International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman later in the year. This news will affect two cricket boards at once. The negative effect will happen on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), who will have to find a new secretary while the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will be happy.
We all know that Jay Shah was the BCCI Secretary, but he was also the current Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President. Having taken over the role from Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief Najmul Hasan Papon in 2021, Shah was re-elected in January 2024. He was the first President to have two consecutive terms. However, his extension was for just one year.
Naqvi to replace Jay Shah as ACC President
Previous reports had suggested that the current PCB Chief, Mohsin Naqvi, was all but set to take over. Now that Jay Shah has been elected as the new ICC Chairman, he’ll surely leave the post.
An ACC Annual General Meeting meeting is scheduled to happen later in the year, and the announcement of Mohsin Naqvi becoming the new President was basically confirmed. “When the ACC meets later this year, it will confirm Naqvi as the next president for a two-year term. When Shah steps down, the PCB chief will take over,” a source told the Hindu last month.

Asia Cup in Pakistan?
If and when elected, Naqvi would be the ACC President for at least two years (2024 to 2026). While the 2025 Asia Cup has been confirmed to take place in India, the venue for the next edition hasn’t been decided. The PCB Chief could then make full use of his power and bring another multi-nation tournament to Pakistan after the ICC Champions Trophy takes place in February-March of 2025.
