PCB chief backtracks from ‘major surgery’ remark, to avoid major conflicts with Babar Azam & Co

Senior pros like Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan can now breathe a sigh of relief as the PCB chief is not likely to set off "major surgery" on Pakistan cricket.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is likely to prioritize stability over upheaval in the national team following their dismal performance in the T20 World Cup 2024. Sources suggest that concerns about upsetting senior players are leading the board towards a cautious approach, opting for minor adjustments rather than a significant overhaul.

No ‘major surgery’ but ‘cosmetic changes’ by PCB?

This decision comes despite PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s previous statements suggesting a “major surgery” was needed. Sources close to the board indicate that reports submitted by head coach Gary Kirsten and senior team manager Wahab Riaz will be reviewed by the governing board, but significant changes are unlikely due to potential friction with established players, as per PTI.

While initial expectations were for a shake-up, insiders suggest “cosmetic changes” are more probable. The current player pool is expected to remain largely intact.

Limited changes expected

Apparently, the key factor influencing this decision is PCB’s desire to avoid confrontation with senior players. Sources revealed that chairman Naqvi is wary of upsetting established figures within the team. Additionally, he has reportedly been advised against making sweeping changes.

The most likely scenario suggests minor tweaks rather than a complete overhaul. This could involve adjustments to the selection committee or a renewed focus on revamping domestic cricket structures. However, the core group of players is expected to remain largely unchanged.
