The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has launched an initiative to elevate player fitness across the country.
For the first time ever, the PCB is conducting nationwide fitness tests for cricketers. In 104 districts spanning Pakistan’s 16 regions. Over 2,300 aspiring cricketers are participating in the fitness test.
PCB’s Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, is looking to establish a fitness culture from the beginning of a player’s journey.
Recently, Naqvi said in a press release, “Test cricketers, international cricketers, and national cricketers must pass all fitness tests, including the Yo-Yo test.”
Fitness test for domestic tournaments
PCB is conducting fitness tests for players who are taking part in the Regional Inter-District Senior Tournament (2024–25). They also serve to promote overall fitness among aspiring cricketers.
Following the Challenge Cup held earlier this year, 23 players from each district were shortlisted for these fitness tests. These players are undergoing assessments supervised by district and regional coaches and trainers.
Passing the fitness tests will be mandatory for participation in a 45-day training camp within each district, leading up to the Inter-District Senior Tournament in September.
A strategic shift
“The PCB has made a strategic shift by conducting fitness tests at the district level this season onwards,” said Abdullah Khurram Niazi, Director of Domestic Cricket Operations. “This initiative will encourage players to prioritise fitness from the very beginning, and this emphasis will carry over to other domestic tournaments. Ultimately, a fitter player base will elevate the overall quality of cricket.” he added.

Player fitness on radar
This focus on fitness resonates with the recent statements of Pakistan’s new Test cricket coach, Jason Gillespie. Gillespie emphasised the importance of consistent performance and highlighted fitness as a key factor. In a recent media interaction, he said, “There are no compromises on fitness in international cricket.”
