Following their T20 World Cup 2024 debacle, Pakistan cricket have pressed their ‘restart’ button. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has recently announced a major overhaul of their selection committee. This move comes after the board removed Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq from the committee. The new selection team will responsible for selecting the squad for the two-Test series against Bangladesh, which is part of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle.
Who are in PCB’s new selection committee?
The new committee boasts a blend of experience and fresh perspectives. Former cricketers Mohammad Yousuf and Asad Shafiq, along with newly appointed coaches Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie, will join the selection process with full voting rights. The inclusion of the captains of the red-ball (Shan Masood) and white-ball teams (to be confirmed) in the decision-making circle signifies a shift in approach for the PCB.
Non-Voting Support Staff
While the core committee holds voting power, the PCB has also included non-voting support staff members. Assistant coach Azhar Mahmood, Advisor to Chairman Bilal Afzal, Manager of Analytics and Team Strategy Hassan Cheema, Director of High-Performance Nadeem Khan, and Director of International Cricket Usman Wahla will provide valuable insights and data analysis.

But what about Babar Azam?
While the PCB has confirmed the involvement of both captains, there is some ambiguity regarding Babar Azam’s specific role. Following Pakistan’s T20 World Cup exit, the board held discussions on captaincy. While Shan Masood remains the Test captain, the T20I and ODI leadership position remains vacant. Babar Azam captained the team to a forgettable World Cup, but it’s unclear if he will continue in that role.
This revamp of the selection committee signals the PCB’s intent to address the frailties exposed during the T20 World Cup. With a new team at the helm, Pakistani fans will be hopeful of a more strategic and successful future for their national team.
