Punjab Kings make big moves, retain Haddin and Joshi ahead of IPL Auction

In the lead-up to IPL 2025, these moves underline Punjab’s ambition to strengthen their squad and support system, aiming for a season of success under Ponting’s guidance.

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) are setting the stage for Indian Premier League – IPL Auction 2025 with some significant moves in their coaching and support staff under newly signed head coach Ricky Ponting. Ahead of the auction, the franchise has retained several key figures and introduced a new face, signalling a renewed focus on a well-rounded coaching structure.

Ricky Ponting set to bring James Hopes onboard

Ricky Ponting’s first significant addition to the Punjab Kings’ setup is set to be former Australian all-rounder James Hopes as per Cricbuzz. Hopes has experience both on and off the field in the IPL, having played in the inaugural 2008 season and later coaching under Ponting at Delhi Capitals.

With 84 ODIs and 12 T20Is under his belt, Hopes declined a contract extension with Delhi Capitals, choosing to continue his work alongside Ponting, who recently signed a four-year contract with Punjab. Hopes’ addition, however, means an exit for Charl Langeveldt, who had served as the team’s fast-bowling coach under former head coach Trevor Bayliss.

Brad Haddin and Sunil Joshi Retained by Punjab Kings

Ponting has opted to retain Brad Haddin and Sunil Joshi, both of whom bring valuable expertise to the coaching staff. Haddin, a trusted lieutenant of Ponting, has been with Punjab as an assistant coach, specialising in batting and wicket-keeping. His IPL coaching experience spans multiple franchises, including a stint with SunRisers Hyderabad under Trevor Bayliss.

Sunil Joshi, a former India spinner and former chief selector, continues in his role as spin bowling coach after two productive seasons with Punjab. His experience with Indian pitches and local players has made him a strategic asset to the team’s bowling lineup.

Changes in PBKS Staff Lineup

The Punjab Kings will also see the departure of Sanjay Bangar, who was signed as head of cricket development on a three-year contract. Bangar’s tenure has been cut short as part of Ponting’s restructuring, while the core fitness team, including strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux and physio Andrew Leipus, will remain with the team.

Ponting’s next major task is to finalise the list of players for retention ahead of the auction, where Punjab Kings traditionally hold one of the largest available purses. Key discussions centre around Indian left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh.

Though his name is under consideration, there is debate within the franchise about his valuation at INR 18 crore, and a Right to Match (RTM) card could potentially be used to acquire him at a more economical rate. Emerging talents Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma, who enjoyed breakout performances last season, are also under review for possible retention as uncapped players for INR 4 crore each.

Strategic Planning ahead of IPL 2025 Auction

With Ricky Ponting at the helm, Punjab Kings appear to be focusing on a blend of experienced IPL coaching staff and fresh, talented players. Hopes’ familiarity with the IPL and Ponting’s leadership style is expected to reinforce the team’s approach. The team’s decisions around player retention will be crucial as they prepare to enter the auction with a formidable budget. These developments highlight Punjab Kings’ commitment to building a competitive side with stability in coaching and a smart approach to player acquisition.

In the lead-up to IPL 2025, these moves underline Punjab’s ambition to strengthen their squad and support system, aiming for a season of success under Ponting’s guidance.
