Pakistan to host tri-series after two decades involving New Zealand and South Africa in 2025

Pakistan last hosted a tri-series in 2004 involving Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Teams stopped touring Pakistan after the terrorist attack on Sri Lanka team in 2009.

After more than two decades, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday declared that it will play a one-day international (ODI) triangular series against South Africa and New Zealand in February 2025. A meeting in Dubai between PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and his counterparts from South Africa and New Zealand, Lawson Naidoo and Roger Twose, resulted in the development.

After attacks on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in 2009, Pakistan did not fully host international cricket until 2020. Two years after those attacks, Pakistan was deprived of its opportunity to co-host the World Cup due to ongoing security concerns. The last time the nation hosted a tri-series featuring Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka was in 2004.

“The agenda of the meeting included the ODI Tri-series between Pakistan, New Zealand and South Africa, to be held in February 2025 in Pakistan, just before the ICC Champions Trophy,” a statement from PCB read.

“The tri-series between Pakistan, South Africa and New Zealand will be an exciting event and it is after a long time that Pakistan will host such a tournament. The PCB is also looking forward to hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 which will be a great pleasure for Pakistan to host the top eight ODI teams on its soil,” the release added.
