Despite the fact that the season began on August 30, 192 players who participated in a number of domestic events, such as the National T20 Cup and the Quaid-e-Azam trophy, have not received their monthly retainers or even match fees. This is very concerning for Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) considering that Pakistan Super League 2023 draft is set to be held on December 15. Thus far, players have only been paid their daily expenses as per ESPNcricinfo.

Due to the amount of domestic cricket played this season, including a brand-new competition in the Pakistan Junior League that required significant administrative resources to stage, several players and sources inside the PCB acknowledged a delay in the distribution of the payments.

This is a very concerning situation for PCB, who on December 15 in Karachi is slated to host the player draft for PSL 8. The players’ draft of the Pakistan Super League 2023 has attracted more than 500 foreign players, including Australians Matthew Wade and Aaron Finch.

Why the delay in Payment?

The PCB Board of Governors’ approval of an increase in the domestic players’ monthly retainers and match payments is also cited as a contributing factor in the delay.

However, for an organistaion led by a former cricketer in Ramiz Raja, the unnecessarily long delay has put a huge number of local cricketers who depend only on cricket for a living through unnecessary problems. This payment delay is also occurring at a time when the Pakistani economy is in utter disarray, with the rupee’s value falling and an inflation rate that peaked in November at over 20%.

Normal domestic contracts for players run from August to July, but this year PCB just handed out the contracts in the middle of the season, in November. And the players didn’t get their contracts until the first week of December, when the Quaid-e-Azam trophy was finished. Nearly 80% of players have signed and returned their contracts, and they anticipate being paid this month.
