Pakistan cricket system “still chaotic”, ex-coach feels “desperately sorry” for Gillespie & Kirsten

Despite being the hosts, Pakistan cricket team, under Mohammad Rizwan, was ousted from the Champions Trophy in the 1st round.

Pakistan cricket team is in a turmoil, for quite long long, and their first round ouster from the Champions Trophy 2025 is a classic example. The blame game has already started, and now even top players like Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam are not being spared. Their former Test coach Jason Gillespie had even called the current coach, Aaqib Javed a “clown”.

Now, another ex coach of the Pakistan cricket team, Mickey Arthur, who spent a substantial time with the team, has substantiated the same point further. In a chat with TalkSport, Arthur said, “I love this quote, to be brutally honest. Jason Gillespie is a wonderful coach, wonderful man. Pakistan cricket just continues to shoot itself in the foot. It is its worst enemy.”

Jason Gillespie, Mickey Arthur Discuss Problems

The South African went on to reveal that the PCB perhaps made the right choices by getting in Gary Kirsten and Gillespie for the dual coaching roles, but then the chaos doesn’t let the coaches and the players function properly. “There are so many good players; they’ve got the resources now; there’s so much young talent. They have incredible skill. And yet, it’s still so chaotic. It’s really disappointing to see.”

Just like Gillespie, even Mickey Arthur pointed out that the local coaches try to “undermine them”, which is part of the problem. “They had got some really good coaches who could take them forward. But then that machine that works in Pakistan just keeps undermining, and agendas are driven in the media,” he said. “It’s a jungle out there and I feel desperately sorry for Gary and Jason. There’s no doubt in my mind that they were undermined… it’s to the detriment of the players and ultimately to the detriment of Pakistan cricket.”
