Pakistan Cricket Overhaul: Pakistan vs NewZealand LIVE: Pakistan’s newly appointed interim chief selector Shahid Afridi wants to follow BCCI and Indian Cricket Team. He has also proposed two build backup players to have two teams ready by the end of 2023. The current India team also fields two simultaneous squads occasionally. However, on the more pressing topic, Afridi has backed Babar Azam to continue captaining Pakistan despite mounting pressure on him to step down from one format. “My dream is to have two teams ready by the end of our tenure. The stronger the bench is, the player who is playing in the main team will realise the competition. We don’t prepare backups. So, players get more secure and continue despite poor performances,” Shahid Afridi said at a press conference on Saturday.

Afridi also backed Babar Azam to continue leading Pakistan despite thrashing 0-3 against England. There have been calls to remove Azam as the Pakistan skipper and concentrate on his batting. He struggled in T20 WC as well.
“Babar Azam is the backbone of the Pakistan team and we will back him. His decision about the declaration yesterday was a good one. We the selection committee will be his shoulders to take Pakistan forward,” Afridi said.
“The major problem that I’ve observed here is the communication gap among management, doctors and the selection committee. It is important for a chief selector – be it me or someone else – to stay in direct contact with players,” he said.
