Former Australian cricket legend Shane Watson remains undecided despite the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) meeting his high salary demands. This comes as the PCB seeks to revamp its coaching setup.
Record-Breaking Offer for Shane Watson
Reports indicate Shane Watson requested a staggering $2 million annually, translating to roughly 46 million Pakistani rupees per month. This would be the highest salary ever offered by the PCB to a foreign coach. Previous coaches like Richard Pybus and Mickey Arthur received significantly less.
Balancing Act: Family, Commitments, and the PCB
PTI sources close to the board reveal that Watson is carefully considering his options. He has a young family in Australia and existing commitments with the USA Major League Cricket. The PCB, however, desires a coach who will invest significant time in Pakistan, including talent development at the domestic level.
Shane Watson concerns: Instability at PCB
Another factor influencing Watson’s decision is the perceived instability within the PCB, with frequent changes in leadership and coaching staff.
This hesitation is understandable, given his lack of prior experience heading an international team. While he has coaching experience in the IPL, the international stage presents a different set of challenges.
Pakistan Cricket Board seeks Foreign Expertise
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has expressed his preference for a foreign coaching setup with the board’s full backing. Despite his recent appointment as Minister of Interior, Naqvi intends to continue his role with the PCB, claiming no conflict of interest.
According to PTI source this isn’t unprecedented, and the ICC has no objections to Naqvi’s dual role.
Decision Yet to Be Made
The PCB has filled several positions with bureaucrats on deputation from the Punjab government. While Naqvi himself won’t draw a salary as Minister of Interior, the wait for Watson’s decision continues. Will the record-breaking offer be enough to convince the Australian star, or will the PCB need to consider other options? Only time will tell.
