DAY 2 RECAP: The Karachi wicket continues to favour the batsmen as willow wielders dominated the proceedings on Day 2. New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Tom Latham put on a record opening partnership as New Zealand ended the day on 165/0.
Tom Latham stayed unbeaten on 78 and Devon Conway was NOT OUT on 82 at STUMPS. Earlier in the day, Pakistan finished with 438 runs in their 1st innings.
An excellent hundred from Salman Agha at number 7 ensured that Pakistan didn’t lose their way. Agha brought up his maiden Test ton but the first session witnessed New Zealand taking three wickets including that of skipper Babar Azam for 161. Tim Southee took three wickets while Ajaz Patel and Michael Bracewell picked up two wickets apiece.
After opting to bat first, the hosts were in a spot of bother. Opener Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood succumbed to Kiwi spinners in quick succession. Ajaz Patel removing Abdullah Shafique for seven and spin partner Michael Bracewell dismissing Shan Masood for three. Babar Azam too could have got out for Bracewell but Daryl Mitchell dropped a simple chance at first slip.
Imam ul Haq later departed for 24 as Pakistan lost three wickets in the first session. Babar Azam and Shaud Shekeel then shared a fifty run partnership, helping Pakistan recover.

Babar continued his rescue act after the break. Wicket-keeper Sarfaraz Ahmed, who is playing his first test in Pakistan gave him company. The duo went on to build a steady 196 run partnership for the fifth wicket. Babar Azam went on to notch up his ninth Test hundred.
The duo batted almost till the end of the day with Sarfraz Ahmed too scoring a well-made 86. However just before the end of the day, Ajaz Patel gave New Zealand a breakthrough by dismissing Ahmed. The former captain when he edged one to Mitchell at first slip.
However Babar Azam stayed strong at the other end and even survived after a DRS referral as he ended the day remaining not out on 161, his second 150 plus score in Test matches.
