Put into bat by Babar Azam, England lost Phil Salt early but debutant Will Jacks played some stunning shots to get the visitors through to the powerplay. Malan struggled and failed to get going, but Duckett looked in good touch as soon as he walked into bat.
Jacks eventually departed for a stunning 40 bringing Harry Brook to the crease. The young superstar took the attack to the Pakistan bowlers from the get-go. Despite their relative inexperience, the duo kept Pakistan on their toes with some stunning shots all around the ground.
Both Brook and Duckett got to their maiden T20I fifties, during a record fourth-wicket stand for England in the format. The pair managed to add 139 from just 69 deliveries taking England to 221. Brook carved eight fours and five sixes to finish not out on 81 off just 35 deliveries, while Duckett managed a 42-ball 70.

In reply, Pakistan’s hopes for a repeat of the Babar Azam-Mohammad Rizwan show was cut short by Mark Wood’s fiery spell up top. Returning after a 6-month spell on the sidelines, Wood consistently bowled above 150 kmph mark to get rid of Azam. Rizwan was foxed by Reece Topley, before Haider Ali also parted cheaply.
Pakistan were 29/4 at the end of the powerplay with Shan Masood and Khushdil Shah rebuilding the innings. However, the asking rate kept climbing to put Pakistan in no position to chase the total. Adil Rashid patrolled the middle overs well with another fine spell, accounting for Khushdil and Mohammad Nawaz.
In the only positive for Pakistan was Shan Masood, who scored a maiden T20I fifty in just his second game. With the hosts’ middle order under the scanner, Masood’s innings comes as a relief for the Men in Green though Babar and Co have a lot of catching up to do.
