PAK vs AUS Semis: Did slow-over rate penalty cost Pakistan a place in ICC U-19 World Cup final?

As per the ICC rules, once the cut-off time for the overs to be bowled out is over, a fielder needs to be brought in to the inner circle.

The Australian team edged out Pakistan narrowly in the semi-final of the ICC U-19 World Cup on Thursday and booked a final date with five-time winners India. But the PAK vs AUS semis came with a bit of drama, as expected. As it eventually turned out, the Asian giants were partly responsible for their own downfall.

The team led by Saad Baig maintained a slow over-rate throughout the second innings, and the team also took a long time to get their fielding right, in the last few balls, where they just needed one wicket to win. As a result, now it has surfaced, that Pakistan exceeded the cut-off time, and were punished for the same.

PAK vs AUS Semis Blunder

As per an ICC rule, if the bowling team exceeds the cut-off time, they have to remove one fielder from the outside and get him/her in the inner circle. The last over of the match began with the Aussies needing only four, and Pakistan only one wicket away. But the latter didn’t have the luxury of a fielder at the fence.

And, as ill fate would have it, Raf MacMillan scored the winning runs after edging one to fine leg. Broadcaster Ian Bishop pointed out the same during commentary, that if Pakistan had a fielder at fine leg, the shot would have only brought a single.
