PAK vs AUS: Ian Chappell targets Pakistan’s sloppy fielding, cites Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis’ mistrust towards fielders

Pakistan's display of sloppy fielding at the MCG in the ongoing PAK vs AUS Test series prompted the legend to touch upon the side's history

Australia legend Ian Chappell took a dig at the Pakistan side for their sloppy fielding which has been prevailing for decades now. The former Australian skipper’s remarks come in line with the several misses by the Men in Green in the ongoing PAK vs AUS Test series. Even Wasim Akram couldn’t hold himself back looking at the fielding, noting that it was a problem for the side for years.

PAK vs AUS: Chappell targets Pakistan’s sloppy fielding history

In a feature for ESPNCricinfo on Pat Cummins, Chappell touched upon how it was essential to have good fielders to compliment skilled bowlers in order to get wickets. He noted that Pakistan weren’t particularly great in their slip catching, equating Inzamam-ul-Haq to Abdullah Shafique over the latter’s missed chances at the MCG.

Chappell further dropped a bomb, suggesting that Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram had claimed 60% of their Test wickets in LBW and bowled, indicating that they had no trust in their own fielders.

At one point in their career the excellent Pakistan pace duo of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis had claimed 60% of their Test and ODI wickets bowled or lbw. That’s an outrageously high figure and suggests the two fast bowlers knew not to trust their own fielders“, Chappell wrote.

“With the great improvement in modern bats, it’s not so much how you bowl – Test bowlers are skilful – but how you perform when a good batter is attacking. That’s when the best bowlers come to the fore”, he added.
