PAK vs AUS: Ex-skipper likens Pat Cummins to Australia legend, ‘captain’s dream, batter’s nightmare’

The former Australian skipper drew parallels between Pat Cummins and the legend after the former led from the front in 2nd PAK vs AUS Test

Former Australian skipper Ian Chappell drew a parallel between skipper Pat Cummins and the legendary Dennis Lillee over their mentality in amassing Test victims. Chappell’s comparison comes after the Australian skipper led from the front in dissecting Pakistan to win the 2nd PAK vs AUS Test.

PAK vs AUS: Cummins ‘captain’s dream and batter’s nightmare’

In his column for ESPNCricinfo, the former skipper explained Lillee had the mentality of wanting to dismiss batters, something which Cummins had in common too. Citing Cummins’ delivery to get rid of the dangerous Babar Azam, Chappell noted that it reminded him of the greatness of the legend. He went on to recall an incident from the Oval in 1972 to supplement his arguement.

Chappell called Cummins and Lillee a ‘captain’s dream and a batter’s nightmare’, explaining how wickets were important the process involved to get them without giving in.

Wickets are important. Just ask Cummins.

One of Lillee’s great traits was that a batter had to overcome his enormous skill first, which was no easy feat. However, if he achieved that difficult task, he still had to outlast his iron will, which took a monumental effort.

On those hot, demanding days, give me a Lillee- or a Cummins-style character who cares only about not giving in and taking wickets rather than how the process feels.

That’s why great fast bowlers like Lillee and Cummins are a captain’s dream and a batter’s nightmare“, Chappell wrote.
