After Surrey teammate Foakes was ruled out on the morning of the first Test in Rawalpindi, Pope kept wicket for just the second time in Test cricket. The 24-year-old performed admirably in his first appearance in the position since 2019 by taking six catches and one stumping. In addition, he scored 15 in the second inning and 108 in the first.

“We found ourselves in that situation and still picked a team that was strong enough to win. We’ll consider all our options,” captain Ben Stokes said.

After all-rounder Liam Livingstone’s knee injury ruled him out of the tour, England will undoubtedly make one change in the second Test against Pakistan, where they may win the series for the first time outside of the UK against Pak in 22 years.

Due to an elbow ailment, Wood, 32, hasn’t participated in a Test since March. He also missed the home summer. One possibility is that Foakes isn’t included and Wood is the only change. Will Jacks, a spin bowling all-rounder, might have to move aside if Wood and Foakes both participate.

“We’ll have to consider all our different options,” Stokes said. “I think there are a few different options we are going to lay out in front of each other, and try and understand what is the best option to try and win this Test match. Because we have got a few other factors that we have to contend with.”

“That’s the great thing about where we’re at at the moment. We found ourselves in that situation [illness in the first Test] and we still managed to pick a team that was strong enough to win a game. As I said, we are going to have a conversation at some point about what we feel is the best route to go,” he added.
