Abid Ali and Abdullah Shafique went on to play knocks of 91 and 73 respectively and helped Pakistan defeat Bangladesh by eight wickets in the first Test. With this win, Pakistan has gained a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Heading into Day 5 of the Test, the visitors needed just 93 more runs for the win and the opening batters made light work of the chase. Resuming Day 5 at 109/0, overnight batters Ali and Shafique started from where they left off and the duo kept Bangladesh bowlers at bay. However, the 151-run opening stand finally came to an end in the 43rd over as Mehidy Hasan dismissed Shafique (73).

Abid Ali (91) failed to reach the three-figure mark and Pakistan lost its second wicket, still, 31 runs away from the target. In the end, it was Azhar Ali (24*) and skipper Babar Azam (13*) who took Pakistan over the line by nine wickets in the first session on Day 5.

Earlier, resuming Day 4 at 39/4, overnight batter Mushfiqur Rahim (16) was bowled by pacer Hasan Ali and the hosts lost their fifth wicket with the lead still being under 100. Yasir Ali had to retire hurt after playing a knock of 36 and this brought Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan together at the crease.

Shaheen Shah Afridi went on to take five wickets as Bangladesh was bowled out for 157, setting a 202-run target for the visitors.

At Day 3 stumps, Bangladesh’s score read 39/4 with the hosts leading by 83 runs. After taking a lead of 44, Bangladesh got off to a bad start as the hosts lost four wickets with just 25 runs on the board. Shadman Islam (1), Najmul Hossain Shanto (0), and Saif Hassan (18*) were dismissed by Shaheen Shah Afridi while Mominul Haque (0) was sent back to the pavilion by Hasan Ali.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Yasir Ali then ensured that Bangladesh do not lose any more wickets before the close of play.
