“Pacers leading teams should happen more”: Pat Cummins backs Jasprit Bumrah ahead of BGT

Pat Cummins praises Bumrah, saying pacers should lead more often, and highlights his impact in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Australia’s captain Pat Cummins is confident that his side will be winning the India vs Australia Test series, also known as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) . The series will see five Tests for the first time in history. Before the commencement of the first Test (22nd November) in Perth Cummins spoke to the media in a Press Conference. He expressed his excitement, saying, “It would be great to win the Border Gavaskar Trophy. India are a great side, but we are prepared.”

Pressure of the BGT

When asked about the weight of the series, Cummins shared that while India is a tough team, Australia is well-prepared for the challenge. The BGT is always a big contest, and winning it would be a major achievement for Australia. “Having five Tests for the first time here is big,” he said.

Bumrah and the rise of pacers leading teams

A crucial part of Cummins’ leadership is his view on pace bowlers taking the lead role in teams. He strongly believes that pacers should play a larger role in leading teams, especially in Test cricket. On Jasprit Bumrah leading India in the first test, Cummins said, “It should happen more (pacers leading teams),”.

Mitch Marsh and Alex Carey’s impact in the team

Cummins also spoke about the all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, confirming that he will bowl in this Test series. “He’ll definitely bowl in this Test. He’s an all-rounder. With four pacers, we didn’t want our all-rounders to bowl a lot of overs,” he said. Marsh’s role will be key to Australia’s balance during the series.

On wicketkeeper Alex Carey, Cummins was full of praise. “Alex Carey has been brilliant. He has been really impressive and in a good place,” he added. Carey has a solid performance behind the stumps and his calm influence on the team.

Young Talent and preparation

The Australian captain also shared his thoughts on the promising youngster Nitish Reddy. He said that Reddy is a talented cricketer who can swing the ball and has great potential. “He is an impressive youngster, he can swing the ball.” Cummins said. Both have played together in IPL team SRH in 2024.
