Prithvi Shaw has gone unsold at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. The swashbuckling opener, who was once thought of as one of the best powerplay batters in the league, couldn’t even receive a bid of Rs 75 lakh, his base price. With the Delhi Capitals since 2018, the story isn’t about Prithvi’s homecoming but rather about him not even getting any interest from any of the ten franchises.
Prithvi Shaw’s issues sees no bidders at IPL 2025 auction
The reason for the non-receival of bids is Prithvi himself. Ever since making his IPL and Team India debut, the opener has found himself in the headlines, and not for the right reasons. Controversy had attracted him like light does moth. Doping controversies, discipline issues, and for years struggles with keeping up with the current fitness standards in professional cricketers.
The most recent controversy was his being dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team due to him being overweight and showing a lack of discipline. The Mumbai Cricket Association talked with the selectors, and captain Ajinkya Rahane felt Prithvi needed a jolt and deserved to be dropped for his own good. Ricky Ponting, the current Punjab Kings head coach and then Delhi Capitals coach, has previously narrated how the opener refused to bat in the nets during the IPL when out of form.
Considering what’s been happening with Prithvi, especially with his fitness not improving for quite a few years now, no franchise decided to take a bet on him despite his base price being just Rs 75 lakh. Luckily, he still has a chance. Although he went unsold, he might still return later in the day and find some interest.
