OTD in 2008: Indian Premier League kickstarts with Brendon McCullum’s record-breaking innings

The T20 extravaganza has provided a platform for countless Indian and international talents to showcase their abilities and has propelled many towards international careers. As the IPL continues to enthrall cricket fans worldwide, there's no doubt that many more historic moments await in the years to come.

On April 18th, 2008, a historic moment unfolded in Indian cricket and world cricket in general. The Indian Premier League (IPL), now the biggest cricketing league globally, had its much-anticipated launch at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

RCB vs KKR sets stage for IPL

Following a high-profile player auction in Mumbai, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) kickstarted the tournament with a grand opening ceremony, introducing fans to the glitz and glamour of the T20 extravaganza.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) led by Rahul Dravid faced off against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captained by Sourav Ganguly, marking the official beginning of the cricketing spectacle.

Brendon McCullum’s stuns RCB

KKR opener Brendon McCullum, then a Kiwi batsman with a modest international record, took the center stage and stole the show. McCullum, playing his first IPL match, announced himself on the grand stage with a breath-taking knock of 158* off just 73 balls, including 10 fours and a staggering 13 sixes.

This knock propelled KKR to a mammoth total of 222/3 in their 20 overs.

Record-Breaking Knock the Ages

McCullum’s belligerent innings was a sight to behold. Initially cautious, he exploded after the second over, smashing Zaheer Khan for 18 runs. He reached his fifty in a mere 32 balls, and within the next 21 deliveries, he had registered the first-ever IPL century. This swashbuckling knock cemented McCullum’s place in IPL history.

McCullum‘s Legacy: Springboard for IPL and KKR

RCB, under immense pressure from the massive total, were restricted to 82 runs, handing KKR a dominant 140-run victory. McCullum’s record stood as the highest individual score in the IPL for a staggering six years, until Chris Gayle surpassed it in 2013. Remarkably, he remained the only KKR centurion for almost 15 years, until Venkatesh Iyer broke the jinx in 2023.

IPL: Indian Premier League

McCullum’s innings set the tone for the entire IPL, which has become a global phenomenon. Today, the IPL is the second-most valuable sporting league globally, only behind the American National Football League (NFL).

The T20 extravaganza has provided a platform for countless Indian and international talents to showcase their abilities and has propelled many towards international careers. As the IPL continues to enthrall cricket fans worldwide, there’s no doubt that many more historic moments await in the years to come.
