On this day twenty years ago, Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag made history by becoming the first player to score three hundred in a Test match. Sehwag accomplished this feat during the opening match of the Test series at the Multan Cricket Stadium between India and their bitter rivals Pakistan.
Rahul Dravid was captaining the Indian cricket team in lieu of Sourav Ganguly. India won the toss and elected to bat first in the opening game. At stumps on the first day, they had amassed 356/2 thanks to an undefeated 228 runs from Virender Sehwag. Sehwag broke the triple-digit barrier on the second day of the test.
The fact that Virender Sehwag was batting on 295 when he hit a huge six in Saqlain Mushtaq’s over and went on to score his triple century added even more specialness to his knock. During that process, he achieved the greatest individual score for an Indian batter in their hometown against their bitter rivals, Pakistan.
It was none other than Sanjay Manjrekar, who in 1989 set a record when he scored 218 runs in Lahore. Finally, Sehwag was removed by Mohammad Sami after he scored an incredible 309 runs off 375 balls. His incredible knock included six maximums and 39 boundaries.
