The South African legend Herschelle Gibbs and Graeme Smith demolished Pakistan’s lethal bowling line-up when they added an opening stand of 368 on Day 1 of the Newlands Test in 2003.
Gibbs scored the fastest double-hundred for Proteas with 228 runs while Smith scored classy 151 runs.
Gibbs-Smith partnership is the fourth highest partnership for South Africa. JA Rudolph and HH Dippenaar hold the record of biggest partnership of 429* runs.
During the match, Gibbs also reached the 3000 Test run mark, becoming the sixth batter on the list. He has played 90 Test matches and scored 6167 runs at an average of 41.95. The right-handed batter has 14 Test centuries and 26 fifties.
Former Proteas captain Smith has struck 9265 runs in 117 Tests at an average of 48.25. He has bagged 27 centuries and 38 fifties.
South Africa had won comprehensively by an innings and 142 runs. Pakistan’s bowler Saqlain Mushtaq was punished with 237 runs in 50 overs. Other bowlers also leaked more than 100 runs in the first innings.
In response to South Africa’s 620/7d in the first innings, Pakistan surrendered after posting 252 and 226 in both innings respectively. Makhaya Ntini was the pick of the bowler for Proteas for taking four wickets in each innings. Gibbs later went on to win the ‘Player of the Match’ for his incredible knock.
