Sachin Tendulkar has often been called the ‘God of cricket’. The former Indian batter has mesmerised India’s cricket-loving audience for decades with his gritty display and consistency. However, 1998 is a year Sachin scored a ton of runs. And his immaculate form started with a match against Bangladesh on this day in 1998.

India and Bangladesh faced off in the first ODI of the Silver Jubilee Independence Cup in Dhaka. Batting first, Bangladesh scored 190 in 48 overs. India needed to get off to a good start but the openers Navjot Sidhu and Sourav Ganguly fell early, making the chase a bit tricky.
However, captain Mohammed Azharuddin and Sachin Tendulkar formed a formidable partnership to pull India out of the setback, forming a 121 run partnership to help India on course to a win. Sachin got out at 54, and his innings marked the start of an astonishing year for Sachin with the bat.
Tendulkar ended up scoring 1,894 runs in 34 matches at an average of 65.31 in the year. Sachin scored nine hundreds in the year. It is a record that stands to this day, with no batter scoring more than seven centuries in a year till now.
